Amara Langley stood on the observation deck of the starship Aurora’s Dream, staring at the endless expanse of stars. She had always dreamed of leaving Earth behind and joining the Galactic Exploration Corps, but now that she was here, her heart felt heavier than she expected.

This was supposed to be a fresh start—a way to leave behind the heartache of her last relationship and discover who she was beyond love and loss.

The hum of footsteps interrupted her thoughts. She turned to see Captain Dax Keenan, the ship’s commanding officer. “Enjoying the view?” Dax asked.

“It’s… beautiful,” Amara said, though her gaze lingered on him longer than intended.

“It’s beautiful,” Amara said, holding it up.
